CATIE Participates in the First National Watershed Congress of Panama

CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) is proud to announce its participation in the First National Watershed Congress of Panama, held from July 24th to 26th. The congress, which gathered over 300 participants, was organized under the theme "Together towards integrated watershed management in Panama: building a future with water security."

This important event was organized by the Ministry of Environment, the Panama Canal Authority, and other institutions, with the support of the United Nations System in Panama. It featured the outstanding participation of Dr. Laura Benegas Negri, CATIE representative, who served as a keynote speaker and panelist.

Dr. Benegas addressed the "Challenges and perspectives in watershed management at the regional level" during her keynote speech. She also participated in the expert panel discussing the "Sustainability challenges in watershed management," where she analyzed national, regional and local perspectives. Furthermore, Dr. Benegas facilitated a parallel session focused on watershed management in the face of challenges such as climate change, water crisis, and environmental degradation. This session allowed for the collection of existing experiences and initiatives in Panama, identifying lessons learned and opportunities to scale these experiences to other watersheds in the country.

CATIE presented its extensive work in watershed management, highlighting innovative elements of financing and green businesses for sustainability. Through this participation, CATIE not only identified existing challenges but also offered solutions based on its experience.

Panama is recognized for its advances in watershed management, supported by a national law and decrees that standardize planning and management processes through officially recognized committees. The experience of the Panama Canal Authority in managing watersheds crucial to its operation was also highlighted during the event.
