Food Waste, Electronic Waste and Fast Fashion Prioritized as Research Topics

In a recent meeting of the collaborative program SCOPE, held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, three crucial research topics were prioritized: food waste, electronic waste, and fast fashion. The meeting included representatives from seven countries, including prominent researchers from the Environmental Economics and Sustainable Agribusiness Unit (UEAAS/EfD) of CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center).

Objective and International Participation

The primary objective of the meeting was to conceptualize and develop a research proposal to secure external funding. This initiative is part of the collaborative SCOPE program (Sustainable Consumption and Production), under the Environment for Development (EfD) initiative. Róger Madrigal and Pablo Evia, researchers from UEAAS/EfD at CATIE, organized the meeting in late May.

"The key points of the meeting were the exchange of ideas and methods on the topics of the SCOPE collaborative program, as well as promoting the debate on new thematic and geographic priorities within the framework of the new EfD funding strategy, which is supported by Swedish cooperation (SIDA)," explained Pablo Evia.

Researchers from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Chile, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and Sweden participated in the meeting. Together, they emphasized the importance of addressing issues such as waste management, the circular economy, and sustainable lifestyles.

The next step is to strengthen the SCOPE collaborative program, coordinated by UEAAS/EfD at CATIE, and continue communication and coordination with member countries. The goal is to develop relevant research that drives transformations in consumption and production patterns, promoting a significant impact towards sustainability.
