From May 31 to June 3, 2023, CATIE and partners hosted the VIII Scientific Wallace Conference, part of a series initiated in 2002 for in-depth discussions on science and technology strategies related to agriculture, natural resources, and biodiversity conservation in the tropics. The conference focused on the pivotal theme of transforming food systems in LAC.

Delving into six thematic areas, participants examined both opportunities and challenges encountered by LAC’s food systems

  • 1 Impacts of land and water degradation, climate change, and vulnerability.

  • 2 Strategies and innovation pathways for climate adaptation and mitigation actions.

  • 3 Finance, investments, and agribusiness to promote adoption and scaling.

  • 4 Sustainable food production and consumption patterns.

  • 5 Empowering women, youth, and local populations for equitable access to nutritious food.

  • 6 Governance for transformative change in food systems.

Nearly 200 people from diverse institutions associated with Food Systems in LAC took part in the Conference, particularly those engaged in research, training, and extension services. The recently published VIII Wallace Scientific Conference Proceedings provides a compilation of the submitted abstracts and a summarized versions of keynote speeches. Its primary aim is to contribute to the dissemination of the knowledge and research shared within the framework of the conference.
