On September 15th, Costa Ricans celebrate Independence Day and commemorate their nation’s journey to freedom with traditional food, parades, fireworks, and the much anticipated torch relay, where a torch is carried from Guatemala to Costa Rica symbolizing the spread of independence across Central America. The Tropics Foundation Launches CATIE Journeys, an Alumni Spotlight Series That Brings Readers Around the World to Meet CATIE Alum |
Indira Ortiz '15 has traveled the world building resilient agriculture systems throughout the Americas as a professional sustainable farm manager. In 2015, her research in El Carrizal, Honduras, where she worked alongside pepper farmers to improve varieties, led her to double down on her belief that biodiversity is key for resilience in every ecological-productive system. |

In early September, CATIE, the Korea-Latin America Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (KoLFACI), and the Cocoa Committee of Central America and the Dominican Republic (SICACAO). co-hosted the Latin American and Caribbean Cacao Forum with a goal of promoting profitable and sustainable cacao production regionally. |

Mireya is currently a graduate student at CATIE studying Economics, Development, and Climate Change. She has a background in animal management and conservation of marine and forest ecosystems.
